Please note that due to the large number of people migrating to Google Apps ITS staff members cannot be available to migrate you. We have provided the directions below to assist you in your migration. A step-by-step guide is provided for each step of your migration. These guides are animated, annotated screen shots showing everything you need to do to successfully migrate.
Please read and follow these instructions carefully. Almost all reported problems have been a result of not following these instructions.
1. Use the Migration Page to create your Google Apps for UNC Asheville account. - Please be sure to log in to your Google account as directed on the final step of the migration page. This "initializes" your account and confirms that your new Google Apps account is ready to accept migration data.
2. Configure your UWC account to set forwarding. This step insures that other UWC users's emails to you will be delivered to your Google Inbox. - Log in to the UWC here : http://uwc.unca.edu
- Go to Options > Mail > Settings and check Enable forwarding.
- Go to Options > Mail > Settings and check Do not leave a copy on server.
- In the Email Address: field type <your username>@mail.unca.edu, then click the Add button.
- Confirm that <your username>@mail.unca.edu appears in the Mail Forwarding list: field, then click the Save button in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Log out of the UWC.
3. Configure your Google Apps for UNC Asheville account to import your UWC mail via the Mail Fetcher. This will import existing mail from your UWC account into your Google Apps for UNC Asheville account. "Folders" or labels from your UWC account will not be preserved! All imported mail will go into your Inbox by default. - Log in to your Google Apps for UNC Asheville Account here : http://webmail.unca.edu
- Click Settings in the upper, right area of the screen.
- On the Settings screen, click on Accounts.
- In the Get mail from other accounts: area click Add a mail account you own.
- When prompted for an email address type <your username>@uwc.unca.edu, then click the Next Step >> button.
- Your username should already be in the Username: field.
- Type your UWC account password in the Password: field.
- Type pop.unca.edu into the POP Server: field.
- Click the Add Account >> button.
- When asked "Would you also like to be able to send mail as <your username>@uwc.unca.edu?" select No, then click the Finish button.
- You will now see <your username>@uwc.unca.edu in the Get mail from other accounts: area.
- Your UWC email will be imported into your Google email Inbox in the background. Depending on the number of emails in your UWC account it may take some time for all of your UWC email to be imported.

4. Export and import Contacts. - Log in to the UWC here : http://uwc.unca.edu
- Select Address Book.
- On the Address Book tab select Import/Export.
- Choose Microsoft Outlook CSV as the Export Format.
- Click the Export button.
- Save the .csv file to an easy to find location, such as your My Documents folder.
- Close the Import and Export Address Book window and log out of the UWC.
- Log in to your Google Apps for UNC Asheville Account here : http://webmail.unca.edu
- Click Contacts in the left, middle area of the screen.
- Click Import in the upper, right area of the Contacts frame.
- Click the Browse... button then navigate to and open the .csv file you saved from the UWC.
- Click the Import button to import your Contacts from the file.
That's it. Your UNC Asheville Google Mail account is ready to go!
Unfortunately the UWC system won't allow you to export Calendar events or Distribution Lists.
Although the functionality appears to be there it has never worked. Any
exported calendar file is 0 bytes and contains no data. |
